THE RIGHT SUITOR

July 23, 2018 0

A child was born about 6 decades ago
Into the hands of a waiting white suitor
She got nurtured and grew by the day
She crawled, leapt and walked in it time

She became a woman and then her crown left
From her, came thirty six offspring
Which she protected and fed unto maturity
A time came when she needed another crown

Suitors came from the north, east and south
She takes turn on each for at most eight years
Each one causing her miscarriages and agony
Who will bring her peace and joy?

Who will put a smile to her face?
The young clamours, the old clamours too
Who is the right suitor for this woman in agony?
Could it be you?

POETRY ANALYSIS
The poem “The Right Suitor” written by Akinjise Daniel in year 2018 is a free verse poem which has 16 lines broken up into 4 quatrains. It is themed or finds it thematic structure on the current situation in Nigeria, an African country. In stanza one, the poet talked about Nigeria, a country that got her independence some decades ago from the British Government (Britain). The poet chooses to describe the country as a feminine gendered character (a woman). The poet consciously made use of metaphoric words like woman, crown, suitor, offspring, and miscarriage, to mention a few in order to suggest a resemblance to the exact point.
In stanza two, the poet talked about a child that grew into womanhood, going through the different phases of human life-cycle to a point where she gave birth to about 36 offspring; which she took care of till the stage of maturity, after which she losses her crown (post-independence).
(Crown in this context means husband. In the African culture, a woman’s husband is regarded as her crown, without which she is incomplete).
In stanza three, the poet talked about her (the woman) supposedly suitable suitors (suitors in this context mean politicians/presidential aspirants) coming from the different regions domiciled in the country; Nigeria, that is the Northern region (Hausa), the Eastern region (Igbo) and the Western region (Yoruba). The poet says that each of these aspirants after being voted into power remains in that post for a maximum of eight years without having something to show for it other than miscarriages. The poet intentionally uses the word “miscarriages” meaning bloodshed which comes from the Fulani herdsmen killing, Boko haram terrorist attacks which is evident in the occurrences happening in northern part of the country (Taraba, Plateau and Adamawa). The question then is who will bring that peace back to Nigeria; the peace that once existed.
In stanza four, the poet asked again a question:’ who will put a smile to her face?” the young clamor, the old clamors too. Not quite long, the young Nigerians requested that a bill: NOT TOO YOUNG TO RUN be passed. But they forgot that a young person was once given a chance and he messed it up. The old ones (Adult) too claims that power should remain with them with the notion that with adulthood comes experience. But there haven’t been reasonable changes since the power has been with them. The woman (Nigeria) then is thrown into a dilemma of who is capable of being her suitor.
In conclusion, the poet throws a question” who is the right suitor for this woman in agony?” Could it be you? The poet advises that both the young and old be given a chance and should make the right use of the chance given, even in the forth-coming general election.

HOW YOUNG PEOPLE CAN TAKE THE LEAD TO END FGM(Female Genital Mutilation) IN NIGERIA

HOW YOUNG PEOPLE CAN TAKE THE LEAD TO END FGM(Female Genital Mutilation) IN NIGERIA

The United Nations has declared that FGM is a violation of the human rights of girls and women. In 2015, there was a landmark ban on FGM in Nigeria, and the international community have prioritized ending FGM in the new Global Goals under GOAL 5 – to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. Nigerian youths can make a difference in this issue by committing to these suggestions:

Here are suggestions of great things young people can do to help bring Female Genital Mutilation to an end
Use the power of social media:
Raise awareness of female genital mutilation and violence against women and girls in Nigeria. Young people can raise awareness through art projects and workshops. They can also make links with young people in different parts of the country. In an era where news can be reported the moment it happens, the power of the individual has increased incredibly. Do not doubt that your words or actions can make a difference because by joining other people working towards the same goal as easily as going on Facebook or Twitter to post and article or simply state your opinions, you have the power to connect with hundreds and thousands of other people at once. Therefore I encourage youth to take whatever small action they can to support the movement to end FGM. This aspect of social media can be considered to share news and awareness about FGM
i. Social media awareness
ii. Creation of blogs
iii. Design of flyers and hand books
iv. Discussion of issues relating to FGM among youth.
v. Share the petition with your followers
vi. Initiate discussions on the best interest of the child in prosecution
vii. Development of the Network.

Volunteering with Human Trafficking movement/NGOs
Coordination and support for member organizations. If you live in a community where FGM is happening see if you can volunteer to help. Even if you don’t its worth finding out how services and individuals can engage with communities. Voicing concerns is important, but it’s practical action that will have the most effect. Support community education because without the support of a community, legislation alone cannot end FGM.

Raise Awareness:
Increase understanding of FGM in the Nigeria. By being aware of the reality and severity of FGM, youth are supporting the movement to end FGM. Youths can achieve this by signing petitions and learning by watching films and reading articles or first-hand accounts .Although more people are aware of FGM the majority are not aware of ‘cutting season’ and just how many girls are at risk. An important step in the fight to stop FGM is simply raising awareness of the problem. Youth can help publicize this to schools in the country informing female students the effect of FGM.

Community Rally /Walk:
Groups that practice Community Rally do so for a complex set of reasons and the procedure has existed for many generations. Just shouting that it’s wrong isn’t going to change their minds. We need to reach out to and work in partnership with resident communities in the Nigeria if we want to stop FGM. The Government should issue grants to help, as part of their anti-FGM initiative.

Stay Vigilant:
Girls who are been cut and pierced are always young, possibly not fully aware of why they are doing it to them, and if they are they may not feel able to speak out. It’s important to watch for warning signs if you know anyone who you believe is at risk.

Help change the law:
Help change the law because not much can be done without laws supporting movements and protecting against FGM, legislation must be created and enforced to enable progress. Youth can help in this aspect by joining in rallies and Walk to sensitize the government on the importance of signing the laws

FGM has been illegal in the UK since 1985. Laws passed then made it an offence to carry out FGM, but this legislation had to be updated for the Female Genital Mutilation Act 2003. With increasing numbers of girls being taken abroad to be cut, it became apparent that more needed to be done.
If the youths of this country take into consideration the above discussed points, then we might be able to cover some grounds concerning the curbing of FGM in Nigeria.

October 13, 2014 0

PRESIDENT OF NIGERIA FOOTBALL
FEDERATION (NFF), MR. AMAJU
PINNICK, HAS DESCRIBED AS AN
EMBARRASSMENT SUPER EAGLES
LOSS TO SUDAN IN THE AFRICA CUP
OF NATIONS QUALIFIER LAST
SATURDAY.                                                                 “It is embarrassing that as reigning champions, we are struggling in the qualifying series, with only one point out of a possible nine. It is an awful output,” stressed the NFF boss“However, we want
our people to be patient and not stampede the federation to take knee-jerk decisions
that will backfire in the end. We are on top of the situation and will take decisions that are in the best interest of Nigeria football.”Pinnick said he understands why
Nigerians are furious over the defeat.“We understand that Nigerians are furious over the fact that the Eagles are last in their pool and are in danger of not qualifying for the finals in Morocco.Everyone feels bad
about this, including the members of NFF
Executive Committee.“I just want to call on
Nigerians to have patience. This new board is determined to do things differently. We are passionate about the
Nigeria game and what we want to
achieve is build a sustainable football
culture for our dear country.“Our target is to ensure that Nigeria finishes in pole position at major football competitions
in Africa and the world, and we believe this is achievable through hard work, diligence, strategic planning and the support of everyone.”The NFF supremo agrees that there is no reason why a country of about 170 million cannot raise a quality squad of
two dozen footballers who can dominate the continental, even global game, and make the nation proud at all times.Having never lost to Sudan in the past 47years,the Eagles played poorly and lost 1-0 in a match they needed to win, thereby endangering qualification for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations. It was also Sudan’s first goal in the qualifying race, having been humbled at home 3-0 by South Africa
and pipped 1-0 in Congo Brazzaville.Mikel Blames 'Nightmare' Pitch for Defeat Super Eagles midfielder, John Mikel Obi, has blamed Nigeria 1-0 loss in Sudan on a
pitch he described
as “a nightmare”.
